Should I stretch before a workout?

The short answer is "yes" but the type of stretching is important. Before a workout, we do want to improve range of motion to help us move freely and avoid injury. In general, we don't want to reduce the tone (read: ability to activate quickly and strongly) in key muscle groups by holding long static stretches.

How can you apply this to your workout today? Let's give you an example: you're planning to do deadlifts today so you need to have full hip flexion range of motion at your disposal. Doing a dynamic stretch with brief holds--such as inchworm+cobra--would be better than a 2-min. static hamstring stretch.

We do want full ROM, we don't want hamstrings that don't want to turn on--you're gonna need your hamstrings firing strongly to get that bar up off the floor in just a few mins!

Hope this helps you to feel, and perform your best today!
